Why your Google Business Profile is your most important local asset

For local businesses, the Google Business Profile is often the first thing a potential customer sees. It appears in the Map Pack — the block of three local results that Google displays above organic results for local searches. Businesses in the Map Pack receive significantly more clicks than those below it.

A fully optimised GBP listing does not guarantee a Map Pack position — distance and competition play major roles — but an incomplete or neglected profile almost guarantees you will not appear there.

What makes a Google Business Profile rank

Google evaluates local listings on three axes: relevance, distance, and prominence. You cannot control distance (you are where you are), but you can directly influence relevance and prominence.

Relevance

Relevance is how well your listing matches what someone searches for. The primary lever is your category selection. Google matches search queries to business categories, so choosing the right primary category is the single most impactful optimisation you can make.

Beyond categories, your business description, services list, and product catalogue all contribute to relevance signals. A profile that clearly describes what you do, using the language your customers use, ranks better for those queries.

Prominence

Prominence is Google's measure of how well-known and trusted your business is. The strongest prominence signals are review count and average rating. A business with 150 reviews averaging 4.6 stars will almost always outrank a competitor with 12 reviews averaging 5.0 stars.

Other prominence signals include: the quality and quantity of photos on your profile, the frequency of Google Posts, how quickly you respond to reviews, and whether your business information is consistent across the web (citations).

The anatomy of a well-optimised profile

Categories

Choose the most specific primary category that describes your core business. Then add secondary categories for additional services. A physiotherapy clinic should use "Physiotherapist" as its primary category, not "Health" or "Medical Centre." Add secondary categories like "Sports Physiotherapist" or "Rehabilitation Centre" if applicable.

Business information

Complete every field Google offers. Business hours, phone number, website, service area, attributes (wheelchair accessible, free Wi-Fi, etc.), and a thorough business description. Google cannot rank you for information it does not have.

Photos and media

Businesses with more than 100 photos receive 520% more calls and 2,717% more direction requests than the average business, according to Google's own data. Upload photos of your storefront, interior, team, products, and work. Update them regularly — a profile with photos from three years ago signals a neglected business.

Reviews

Reviews are the most visible trust signal on your profile. The goal is not a perfect 5.0 rating — that can look suspicious. The goal is a high volume of genuine reviews with a strong average rating (4.3 or above) and thoughtful owner responses to every review, positive or negative.

Google Posts

Google Posts are short updates that appear on your profile. They can announce events, offers, products, or general updates. Posting weekly signals to Google that your business is active and engaged. Posts expire after seven days, so consistency matters more than any single post.

Common mistakes we see

Wrong primary category. The most common and most damaging mistake. A digital marketing agency listing as "Internet Marketing Service" instead of the more specific category available loses relevance for their target searches.

Incomplete attributes. Google offers dozens of attributes depending on your business type — payment methods, accessibility features, amenities, service options. Each unchecked attribute is a missed signal.

Ignoring reviews. Businesses that do not respond to reviews — especially negative ones — signal to Google and to customers that they are not actively managing their reputation.

Inconsistent NAP. If your business name, address, and phone number differ between your GBP, website, and directory listings, Google loses confidence in your information. Consistency across all platforms is fundamental.

From audit to action

Our free checker identifies the specific gaps in your profile. Most fixes take minutes — updating categories, adding missing attributes, uploading photos. The harder part is the ongoing work: building review volume, posting consistently, and coordinating your GBP with your website and local citations.

For competitive local markets, that coordination is what separates the Map Pack from page two. If you need help building a complete local SEO strategy, our team can help.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What is Google Business Profile optimisation?

Google Business Profile optimisation is the process of completing and refining your GBP listing to rank higher in local search results and Google Maps. This includes choosing the right categories, adding complete business information, uploading quality photos, responding to reviews, publishing Google Posts, and answering common questions in the Q&A section.

How does Google Business Profile affect local search rankings?

Google uses three primary factors for local rankings: relevance (how well your listing matches the search query), distance (how close your business is to the searcher), and prominence (how well-known and well-reviewed your business is). Your GBP listing directly influences relevance and prominence. A complete, accurate, and active profile signals to Google that your business is legitimate and relevant.

How often should I update my Google Business Profile?

At minimum, check your profile monthly for accuracy and respond to all new reviews within 48 hours. Post Google Posts weekly if possible — Google rewards active profiles. Update photos quarterly, and review your categories and attributes whenever you add a new service or product line.

What are Google Business Profile categories and why do they matter?

Categories tell Google what your business does and which searches you should appear in. You can select one primary category and up to nine additional categories. Your primary category has the strongest influence on rankings. Choose the most specific category that accurately describes your core business — 'Italian Restaurant' ranks better for Italian food searches than 'Restaurant' alone.

Can I optimise my Google Business Profile myself?

Yes, most GBP optimisation can be done directly in the Google Business Profile dashboard. Our free checker tells you exactly what to update. The most impactful actions — choosing the right categories, completing all attributes, and responding to reviews — are straightforward.
