What your Google reviews tell you about your local competitive position

Your Google review profile is not just a trust signal for customers — it is one of the strongest ranking factors in local search. Google uses review count, rating, velocity, and recency as core inputs when deciding which businesses to show in the Map Pack, the block of three local results that appears above organic search results.

Checking your reviews in isolation tells you very little. A 4.5-star average with 80 reviews might sound strong — until you see that the three businesses in the Map Pack have 200, 150, and 120 reviews each. Context is everything in local SEO, and the context that matters is your competitive landscape.

The metrics that matter

Review count

The total number of Google reviews is the most visible metric and one of the strongest local ranking signals. Higher review counts correlate strongly with Map Pack placement. But the target is not an abstract "more" — it is specific to your market. Our checker compares your count directly to the competitors currently ranking above you, giving you a concrete number to work toward.

Average rating

Google uses average rating as a quality signal, and users use it as a decision filter. Research consistently shows that businesses below 4.0 stars lose significant click-through traffic. The sweet spot is 4.3 to 4.8 — high enough to signal quality, but not so perfect that it looks manufactured. A 4.6 with 200 reviews outperforms a 5.0 with 12 reviews in both ranking and conversion.

Review velocity

Review velocity measures how frequently new reviews arrive. Steady, consistent review growth signals to Google that your business is active and that customers continue to have experiences worth sharing. A burst of 30 reviews in one week followed by months of silence looks less natural than three to five reviews per month consistently.

Our checker tracks your velocity and compares it to competitors, so you can see whether you're gaining ground or falling behind.

Response rate

Responding to reviews — all reviews, positive and negative — signals to Google that you actively manage your business. It also builds trust with prospective customers who read the responses. Our checker measures your response rate and compares it to competitors. Businesses that respond to every review consistently outperform those that do not.

How to read your benchmark report

The report is a competitive gap analysis. For each metric, you see your number alongside the businesses currently winning in local search for your keywords. The gaps tell you where to focus:

Review count gap — If you have 60 reviews and the Map Pack leader has 200, that is your primary gap. Building review volume should be your top priority. See our guide on how to get more Google reviews for practical strategies.

Velocity gap — If competitors gain five reviews per month and you gain one, you are falling further behind every month even if you start generating more reviews. Systematising your review requests — automated post-service emails, SMS follow-ups, QR codes at point of sale — is the fix.

Response gap — If competitors respond to 90% of reviews and you respond to 30%, you are leaving ranking signals and customer trust on the table. This is the easiest gap to close — it requires time, not budget.

Rating gap — If your rating is significantly lower than competitors, addressing the underlying service issues matters more than chasing volume. More reviews on top of a service problem will not help.

Reviews in the context of local SEO

Reviews are one of several factors in local search success. Your Google Business Profile completeness, your website's local relevance, the consistency of your business information across the web (citations), and the depth of your local content all contribute to Map Pack placement.

A strong review profile on a poorly optimised Google Business Profile will underperform. And a perfect GBP with no reviews will struggle against reviewed competitors. Local SEO works as a system, not as individual tactics.

For a coordinated approach to local SEO — covering GBP optimisation, review strategy, citation management, and local content — our team can help build the complete picture.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

How do I check my Google reviews?

Enter your business name in our free checker above. We pull your review count, average rating, response rate, and recent review velocity directly from your Google Business Profile. You'll also see how these numbers compare to the competitors currently ranking in the local Map Pack for your keywords.

How many Google reviews do I need?

There is no fixed number — it depends on your industry and local market. The answer is: more than your direct competitors. Our checker shows you exactly how many reviews the businesses currently in the Map Pack have, giving you a concrete target. In most markets, the Map Pack winners have 2 to 5 times more reviews than the average competitor.

Do Google review responses affect local rankings?

Google has stated that responding to reviews signals that you value your customers, which can improve your local ranking. Beyond the direct effect, responses increase the likelihood that future customers will leave reviews — they can see that the business owner reads and responds. A 100% response rate to all reviews, positive and negative, is the standard to aim for.

What is review velocity and why does it matter?

Review velocity is the rate at which you gain new reviews over time. A business that gained 50 reviews three years ago and has received none since sends a different signal than one that gains three to five reviews per month consistently. Google favours active profiles with steady review growth. Our checker measures your velocity against competitors so you can see if you're keeping pace.

Can I check a competitor's Google reviews too?

Yes. Our benchmarker automatically identifies and checks the reviews of businesses ranking in the Map Pack for your keywords. You'll see each competitor's review count, average rating, and velocity alongside your own — giving you a clear picture of what it takes to compete in your local market.
