The shift from ranking to being cited
For twenty years, the goal of online visibility was simple: rank on page one of Google. The user searched, scanned the results, and clicked a link. Your job was to be one of those links.
AI answer engines change the dynamic. When a user asks ChatGPT, Perplexity, or Google AI Overviews a question, they get an answer — not a list of links. The answer is synthesised from multiple sources, and only some of those sources are cited. The new question is not "do I rank?" but "am I the source?"
This is not a future concern. Google AI Overviews now appear for an estimated 30% of search queries. Perplexity serves millions of queries daily. ChatGPT's search feature is growing rapidly. The traffic and authority implications of being cited — or not cited — in these answers are real and growing.
How AI answer engines decide what to cite
AI answer engines do not rank pages the way traditional search does. They synthesise answers from multiple sources and selectively attribute information. The sources they choose share common characteristics:
Topical authority. Sites that demonstrate deep expertise on a topic — through comprehensive content, consistent publishing, and expert authorship — are cited more frequently than sites with superficial coverage. A site with fifty well-written articles on SEO is more likely to be cited for an SEO question than a generalist site with one article.
Structured content. AI models extract information more easily from well-structured pages. Clear headings, concise paragraphs, bulleted lists, tables, and FAQ sections all make content more machine-parseable. Pages that bury answers in dense prose are harder for models to extract from.
Structured data. Schema markup — especially Organization, Article, FAQ, and HowTo types — provides explicit signals about what your content is and who produced it. This metadata helps AI engines validate and attribute information. Pages with comprehensive structured data are more likely to be correctly attributed.
Factual clarity. AI models prefer sources that make clear, specific claims. "Our platform reduces support ticket volume by 40% on average" is more citable than "our platform can help reduce support tickets." Specificity and confidence signal authority.
Web-wide consistency. AI models cross-reference information across sources. If your business name, credentials, and claims are consistent across your website, directory listings, press mentions, and social profiles, the model has higher confidence in your information.
What AEO looks like in practice
Content architecture
Organise your content around the questions your audience asks. Each page should target a clear topic and provide a definitive answer. Hub-and-spoke content structures — where a pillar page covers a broad topic and linked subpages cover specific aspects — perform well for both traditional SEO and AI citation.
Question-and-answer formatting
Include explicit Q&A sections on your pages, marked up with FAQ schema. AI models are trained to identify and extract question-and-answer pairs. A page that directly asks "What is answer engine optimisation?" and provides a clear, concise answer in the next paragraph is more likely to be cited for that question.
Authoritative sourcing
Cite your own data, case studies, and expertise. AI models are more likely to cite sources that present original information — proprietary research, client results, industry data — than sources that simply rewrite information available elsewhere.
Freshness
AI models and their search indexes favour recent content. Regularly updating your key pages — adding new data, expanding sections, reflecting industry changes — keeps your content competitive for citation. A page last updated in 2022 will increasingly lose citations to a competitor's page updated in 2025.
Measuring AI visibility
Traditional SEO measurement is straightforward: track rankings, clicks, and impressions in Search Console. AI visibility measurement is newer and less standardised.
Our AI Visibility Checker queries major answer engines for topics relevant to your business and tracks whether your brand or content is cited in the responses. This gives you a baseline visibility score and a competitor comparison — who is being cited instead of you, and for which topics.
Over time, tracking these metrics monthly reveals whether your content strategy is moving the needle. The gap between your current citation rate and your competitors' tells you where to focus.
From visibility to strategy
The checker tells you where you stand. Closing the gaps requires a coordinated approach: content that demonstrates topical authority, structured data that makes your content machine-readable, and consistent publishing that builds your reputation as a source.

Frequently asked questions
What is answer engine optimisation (AEO)?
Answer engine optimisation is the practice of making your content more likely to be cited in AI-generated answers. While traditional SEO focuses on ranking in search result pages, AEO focuses on being the source that AI models — like ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews — reference when they answer user questions. It involves structured content, topical authority, clear factual statements, and proper structured data.
How do AI answer engines choose which sources to cite?
AI answer engines prioritise sources that are authoritative, well-structured, and directly relevant to the query. Key factors include: domain authority and backlink profile, topical depth and expertise signals, structured data (schema markup), clear and concise answers to specific questions, recency and freshness, and consistency of information across the web. Pages that answer questions directly in well-structured formats tend to be cited more frequently.
Is AEO different from SEO?
AEO builds on SEO but optimises for different outcomes. SEO aims to rank your page in search results. AEO aims to get your content cited as a source in AI-generated answers. Many SEO best practices — authoritative content, structured data, topical depth — also support AEO. But AEO places additional emphasis on question-and-answer formats, factual clarity, and the kind of structured content that AI models can extract and attribute.
How can I get my brand mentioned in ChatGPT?
ChatGPT's training data includes web content, so being widely cited and linked across the web increases your chances of appearing in its responses. For ChatGPT's search feature and Perplexity (which cite sources in real-time), the factors are closer to traditional SEO: authoritative content, clear answers to specific questions, structured data, and topical expertise. Publishing comprehensive, well-structured content on your core topics is the most reliable path.
How often should I check my AI visibility?
Monthly checks are a good cadence. AI model responses can shift as models are updated, new content enters training data, and competitors publish competing content. Tracking your visibility over time helps you understand trends and measure the impact of your content strategy on AI citation rates.
